The Brontë sisters changed literature forever, but before Haworth, before the novels, before the fame, there was Thornton. It was here, at the Birthplace, that the story began.
Today, Be More Brontë is our invitation to visitors, volunteers, members and supporters to take inspiration from the Brontës’ creativity, courage and determination in their own lives.
Whether that means breaking boundaries, finding your voice, pursuing creativity, supporting your community or simply daring to think differently, there is no single definition of what it means to Be More Brontë.
On the Brontë Birthplace’s first anniversary, Her Majesty Queen Camilla unveiled our commemorative plaque and signed a Be More Brontë postcard in support of the initiative, helping us champion the enduring relevance of the Brontës for new generations.
The Brontës’ journey began in Thornton and reached the world through Haworth. Their legacy still inspires people today, not only through literature, but through imagination, resilience and ambition.
And now, we invite you to discover what Be More Brontë means to you.
What Does “Be More Brontë” Mean?
To the people behind the scenes, ‘Be More Brontë‘ means taking inspiration from the Brontës’ spirit of creativity, curiosity, determination and courage.
But it can mean something different to everyone.

Because there isn’t one defining way to ‘Be More Brontë’, there are thousands.
Inspiring Learning Through Storytelling
The Brontë Birthplace may be small in size, but it offers a powerful starting point for curiosity, creativity and learning.
Through guided tours, exhibitions, interpretation panels, talks and community engagement, we encourage visitors of all ages to explore the lives, legacy and imagination of the Brontë family, and the Birthplace in which they took their first steps.
From Thornton to Haworth, the Brontës’ journey reflects themes that still resonate today, identity, ambition, creativity, family, education and social change.
Our Be More Brontë initiative helps bring those ideas into the present day by encouraging people to reflect on how the Brontës’ story can inspire their own.
