An American in Bronte Country

Chicago-born Garett Wilde is about to open his first ever exhibition at the Bronte Birthplace.

The photographer who moved to Haworth to be with his English wife Anna, has a huge passion for everything Bronte and his atmospheric photographs reflect this. “There is something so incredibly mystifying about the landscape. I love the way it can just change in seconds, I find that so inspirational,” he said.

“I also love the vastness of it and even in winter when it is dark and damp there is still something incredibly beautiful and stark about it,” he added.
A photographer for the past 16 years, Garett mainly focuses on architecture and landscape. He recalls watching a play of Jane Eyre when he was at school in America and has always been intrigued by the sisters.

After visiting Haworth for a number of years with his wife, who is from the South East of England, the couple decided to move to the village.
He said: “I love everything about it here, in the States everything is so big and I guess kind of chaotic, whereas everything here just feels a bit more gentle and more down to earth and that is what I’ve really loved about the place.”

When he saw an opportunity to exhibit his work at the Bronte Birthplace as part of the artist in residence scheme, Garett jumped at the chance. He applied through the website and was accepted.
He said: “I could not have thought of a better place, somewhere as significant and incredible as the Bronte Birthplace.
“It’s such a great place – it’s astounding and to be in the place they were born really blows my mind.”
Garett’s exhibition is called Bronte Country and Beyond and in 16 varying pieces he illustrates the landscape he walks in with his wife, some of which is in Yorkshire and some in other parts of the UK.
The exhibition, which is the first Garett has done, runs for eight weeks from this Saturday, January 24.
