Brontë Birthplace

Education Programme

Key Stages 1 & 2

Step into the very house where the Brontë story began and explore our educational programmes. A visit to the Brontë Birthplace offers primary pupils a rich and inspiring learning experience from discovering what life was like in the early 1800s to exploring how ordinary childhood moments can spark extraordinary creativity.

Our workshops and guided visits bring history, storytelling, and imagination together. Pupils will uncover what inspired the young Brontës, explore how family life shaped their ideas, and think about how they might turn their own experiences into stories too.

Each session is designed to support creativity, communication, observation, and historical enquiry, all while connecting with key elements of the national curriculum in English, History, and Art. Activities are tailored to suit both KS1 and KS2 learners, ensuring content and delivery fit the age and ability of each group.

Introduction to the Brontës

This workshop is designed to bring the Brontës to life. Starting off with a tour of the house we then move to our learning space to focus on the society the Brontës lived in and how it shaped them and their work. All children will have the opportunity to write their own aspirations in our Be More Brontë book that will be kept at the house for them to revisit in the future.

In our lovely parlour and scullery there will be artefacts to handle and investigate, and children can join Nancy in the scullery to help with the wash day jobs, giving them understanding of child labour in the 19th century.

Be More Brontë KS2

Our core workshop looks at the history of the Brontës and the societal constraints they had to overcome to be successful authors.  It also has a PSHE focus with activities looking at self-confidence, values, aspirations and resilience. How did life and society affect the Brontës and do these things still affect us in the same way?

The morning will also include artefact handling and investigation, and a tour of the house.

The afternoon focusses on the history of the village with the Thornton Through the Ages tour where workbooks will be provided for all children. The afternoon can be led by your own teachers or a member of the Brontë Birthplace team.
