Over the last few weeks, several people have asked why we’re appealing for more donations through our Furnishing Fundraiser. To address this, here’s how grants work and why your continued support is vital.
We’ve been fortunate to secure grant funding thanks to the tireless efforts of our committee members, who spend countless hours preparing detailed applications. These applications require:
When grants are awarded, two questions are key:
Grant money is “release of funds,” meaning it can only be spent on specific items outlined in the application, such as employment costs, software, and refurbishing the Brontë Birthplace. These restrictions mean that not all expenses can be covered.
Grants often come with non-financial expectations. For example, one of our grants requires us to improve employability in Bradford—a goal we’re thrilled to achieve!
Grant providers rarely release funds upfront. We must document expenditures and progress to unlock further payments, ensuring the money is spent correctly.
Many grants require “matching”—raising additional funds to unlock the full value of the grant. For every £10 donation, up to £90 in grant funding can be released. Until we’re open and self-sustaining, we rely on fundraising to meet these commitments. It’s a chicken-and-egg situation!
Despite significant grant funding, we lack unrestricted funds to properly furnish the Brontë Birthplace. To create a space that inspires learning, creativity, and social connection—our core mission—we need your help.
Every donation brings us closer to preserving this vital piece of literary history for future generations.
