As part of this year’s Heritage Open Days, we invite you to uncover the hidden history of Thornton and the birthplace of the Brontë sisters, on a special walking tour celebrating the village’s rich cultural, industrial, and architectural heritage.
Led by local historian and photographer Mathew Gibbons, this 90-minute tour begins at the newly reopened Brontë Birthplace and guides you through key landmarks including the Brontë Bell Chapel ruins, Thornton Viaduct, South Square Centre, and the village’s iconic snickets and ginnels. Once overlooked, Thornton’s story is now being rediscovered—and you’re invited to be part of it.
This is a unique opportunity to explore the village that shaped one of literature’s most iconic families, all while enjoying the spirit of Heritage Open Days: free access, local stories, and shared history. The tour ends back at the Birthplace, where you can relax in the café, browse the gift shop, or book a house tour to continue your visit.
Tour times at 10am & 1pm and the place to meet is at the Brontë Birthplace.
