Brontë Birthplace Walking Tours

A Heritage Open Days Highlight

As part of this year’s Heritage Open Days, we were thrilled to launch our very first Brontë Birthplace Walking Tours, inviting visitors to explore the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Thornton.

Led by local historian and photographer Matt Gibbons, the tours took guests on a journey through Thornton’s hidden gems, from the Brontë Bell Chapel ruins, the Brontë exhibition in St James’ Church and South Square to the village’s iconic snickets and ginnels. Each stop revealed a new layer of history, connecting the Brontës’ early life to the vibrant character of the village today.

Reflecting on the experience

“It was a real joy to share Thornton’s story with such engaged and curious visitors. The village has so much to offer, and it’s wonderful to see people discovering its links to the Brontë legacy. What struck me most was the genuine interest people had in the lesser-known aspects of the Brontës’ early life and how Thornton’s industrial and cultural past shaped their world. I’ve lived here for years, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the community’s history being appreciated in new ways.” – Matt Gibbons

Visitors responded with enthusiasm and warmth

“We took our daughter to Brontë Country for the weekend to celebrate her birthday and booked onto one of the first walking tours of Thornton offered by the Brontë Birthplace. The guides, Matthew and Thomas, had great local knowledge and are clearly passionate about the village and the recently opened Birthplace.

We had a guided tour of the house which included the beautiful bedrooms which visitors can stay in. We would love to come back to do that!”

The tours concluded back at the Birthplace, where guests could relax in the café, browse the gift shop, or book a house tour — rounding off a memorable and meaningful experience.
