Brontë Birthplace Blooms with Community Spirit

Our involvement in Thornton Open Gardens & Thornton in Bloom 2025

This July, we were delighted to be part of two joyful community celebrations of Thornton’s green spaces and growing pride — Thornton Open Gardens and Thornton in Bloom, both supported through the national RHS Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

As part of Thornton Open Gardens (12–13 July), the Brontë Birthplace was proudly listed on the programme as a local point of interest — welcoming visitors from near and far to explore our historic site while enjoying the sights, scents and serenity of village gardens in full summer bloom.

Our involvement...

On Tuesday 16 July, we had the honour of hosting the Thornton in Bloom judging panel right here at the Birthplace, where we kicked off the day with coffee, cake, and warm welcomes for both the judges and local contributors. As part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Yorkshire in Bloom competition, the judging process evaluates three core areas: horticulture, environment, and community — with particular attention to sense of place and local identity.

“Our Thornton in Bloom group took part in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Yorkshire in Bloom competition, which assesses three key aspects of our activities – horticulture, environment and community. Sense of place and local identity is one of the key criteria under the environment section, so we were grateful to the Brontë Birthplace for hosting morning coffee and cake for the judges and contributors before the start of the tour. Anna, the General Manager, kindly gave them a guided tour of the house, helping show how this iconic location continues to connect with the community today.”
Sarah Dixon, organiser and former Chair of the Brontë Birthplace

The Brontë Birthplace Garden...

We were also proud to sponsor one of the community flower beds this year, adding a splash of colour and heritage pride to the Thornton trail.

And just outside our own front door, a once-overlooked courtyard has slowly been transformed into a peaceful little garden — lovingly brought to life by our team of dedicated volunteers. Their efforts have created a bright and beautiful welcome for visitors and passers-by alike, and we’re excited to share some of the latest photos taken by our brilliant photographer very soon.

We’re so grateful to the Thornton in Bloom team, and to all the residents, gardeners, and volunteers who make our village such a beautiful and welcoming place. The results of the RHS judging will be announced this autumn — and whatever the outcome, we think Thornton is already blooming brilliantly.
